Confidence (C1 – C4)

WestSwim’s Confidence program is an introduction to independent swimming and is suitable for children 3 years and over. This program has 4 levels and teaches swimmers basic swimming technique and water safety skills.

Confidence 1 (C1); Body position

C1, Body position swimmers are usually new to the aquatic environment or have recently graduated from our Awareness program. C1 focusses on water familiarisation, buoyancy and body position in both vertical and horizontal positions.

In C1, we focus on the following skills:

  1. Safe entry and exit to the pool,
  2. Submersion with breath control,
  3. Stable, balanced front float,
  4. Stable, balanced back float,
  5. Water safety skills.

Class size: 3 swimmers | Class duration: 30 minutes 


Confidence 2 (C2); Kicking

In C2, Kicking, swimmers focus on the introduction and development of their freestyle and backstroke kick, whilst reinforcing their natural balance and stability in a horizontal position.

In C2, we focus on the following skills:

  1. Safe entry and exit to the pool,
  2. Torpedo’s with strong kicking action,
  3. Back kick with strong kicking action,
  4. Water safety skills.

Class size: 3 swimmers | Class duration: 30 minutes 


Confidence 3 (C3); Arms

In C3, Arms, our swimmers have developed a propulsive kicking action and are strong enough to begin learning freestyle and backstroke arm actions. Coordinating limb movements, whilst maintaining a stable and balanced body position can be tricky for learners.

In C3, we focus on the following skills:

  1. Safe entry and exit to the pool,
  2. Development of torpedo kicking action,
  3. Introduction to freestyle arms,
  4. Development of back kicking action,
  5. Introduction to backstroke arms,
  6. Introduction to diving skills,
  7. Water safety skills.

Class size: 4 swimmers | Class duration: 30 minutes


Confidence 4 (C4); Timing

C4; Timing builds the fundamentals of freestyle and backstroke by introducing correct stroke timing with a coordinated breathing pattern

  1. Safe entry and exit to the pool,
  2. Development of coordinated freestyle arm and leg actions,
  3. Introduction to coordinated freestyle timing and breathing,
  4. Development of swimmer’s backstroke arm and leg action together,
  5. Introduction to coordinated backstroke timing and breathing,
  6. Introduction to sitting dives,
  7. Water safety skills.
