Developing Confidence

The entry levels of WestSwim’s Learn to Swim program focus on water familiarisation and the development of confidence. Swimmers are introduced to basic swimming technique and water safety skills and will be ready to begin developing endurance towards the end of these levels.


Level 1 – Angelfish

In this level, our swimmers are usually new to the aquatic environment or have recently graduated from our Tadpole level.
Much like the Tadpole program, this level focuses on water familiarisation, confidence and the development of basic swimming skills.

In the Angelfish stage, we focus on the following skills:

  1. Safe entry and exit to the pool.Angelfish-150x150
  2. Submersion with breath control.
  3. Introduction of freestyle kicking.
  4. Introduction of backstroke kicking.
  5. Water safety skills.

Class size: 4 swimmers | Class duration: 30 minutes 


Level 2 – Alligators

In this level, our swimmers are normally have now built the confidence to move into the next stage of learning. We begin to introduce the idea of freestyle and backstroke arms, while continuing to build and refresh on the skills learn in the Angelfish level. In

the Alligators stage, we focus on the following skills:

  1. Safe entry and exit to the pool.
  2. Torpedo’s with strong kicking action.
  3. Introduction of freestyle arms.
  4. Introduction of backstroke arms.
  5. Water safety skills.

Class size: 4 swimmers | Class duration: 30 minutes 


Level 3a – Minnows

In this level, our swimmers are still enjoying the fun aspect of swimming lessons, but are beginning to encompass the skills needed to move forward through the pathway. In Minnows we are focusing on learning freestyle and backstroke fully, off the board, as well as mastering breath control. In the Minnows stage, we focus on the following skills:

  1. Safe entry and exit to the pool.minnow-150x150.jpg
  2. Introduction of freestyle, with breathing.
  3. Introduction of backstroke.
  4. Water safety skills.

Class size: 4 swimmers | Class duration: 30 minutes


Level 3b – Swordfish

This level really focuses on building the fundamentals of freestyle and backstroke, refining the skills to be able to complete un-aided. We also start to introduce the concept of breaststroke, particularly the kick. Swimmers also start building  strength and swimming for longer periods. In the Swordfish stage, we focus on the following skills:

  1. Safe entry and exit to the pool.swordfish-150x150.jpg
  2. Complete freestyle, without aid.
  3. Complete backstroke, without aid.
  4. Introduction to breaststroke kick.
  5. Water safety skills.
