Awareness (A1 – A4)

Awareness is our parent and child class program which includes 4 levels and is suitable for children from 4 months to 3 years of age.

Please note, the Awareness program is only available at WestSwim Lakelands


Awareness 1 (A1) – Aquatic foundations

A1, Aquatic foundations, is the first introduction to formal aquatic education for both parent and infant. This level aims to create and foster a strong bonding experience whilst providing a stimulating and nurturing learning environment.

In A1, we focus on learning the following skills:

  1. Safe entry and exit to the pool with an infant,
  2. Introduction to aquatic education, role of the parent,
  3. Developing parental confidence in the water,
  4. Understand and respond to infant’s cues,
  5. Infant to experience the sensation of their body in water,
  6. Infant conditioning to breath control
  7. Buoyancy and floatation

Class size: 6 swimmers and adults | Class duration: 30 minutes | Age group: 4 to 8 months


Awareness 2 (A2); Water familisation

A2, Water familiarisation is all about familiarising your child with the aquatic environment by introducing basic floating and propulsive movement skills

In A2 we focus on learning the following skills;

  1. Safe entry and exit to the pool with an infant,
  2. Understand and respond to infant’s cues,
  3. Infant conditioning to breath control,
  4. Flotation and rotation,
  5. Balance and propulsion,
  6. Safety skills

Class size: 6 swimmers and adults | Class duration: 30 minutes | Age group: 8 to 14 months


Awareness 3 (A3); Safety

A3, Safety promotes independent water exploration whilst further developing the toddler’s safety skills

In A3 we focus on learning the following skills;

  1. Safe entry and exit to the pool with a toddler,
  2. Exploration of the water with greater independence,
  3. Submersion and breath control,
  4. Flotation and rotation,
  5. Balance and propulsion,
  6. Safety skills

Class size: 6 swimmers and adults | Class duration: 30 minutes | Age group: 14 to 24 months


Awareness 4 (A4); Confidence

A4; Confidence further develops independent swimming through routines and skills which encourage safe water practices

In A4 we focus on learning the following skills;

  1. Safe entry and exit to the pool with a toddler,
  2. Exploration of the water with greater independence,
  3. Submersion and breath control,
  4. Flotation and rotation,
  5. Balance and propulsion,
  6. Safety skills

Class size: 6 swimmers and adults | Class duration: 30 minutes | Age group: 2 to 3 years
